Message from Brake, the road safety charity
Brake's chief executive - Mary Williams OBE
Brake is a national charity dedicated to preventing death and injury on the roads and caring for road crash victims.
Brake's care services for people affected by a road crash include support packs that are handed by police to affected families following every death on the road in the UK and following many serious injuries. Brake also runs a dedicated BrakeCare helpline (01484 421611), providing a listening ear and practical information to crash victims.
Through our care services, we are all too aware of the trauma and devastation caused by death and injury on the roads. However, we are also aware that the vast majority of these casualties could be prevented, often by road users taking simple steps to protect themselves, their families, and other road users.
For this reason, Brake runs numerous education campaigns. These range from events for schools and nurseries to educate children on walking safely (such as Beep Beep! Day), to hard-hitting presentations delivered by trained volunteers to groups of young drivers. Brake also runs a Fleet Safety Forum division, to advise companies that run fleets how to improve the safety of their drivers and vehicles. Brake's flagship awareness-raising event is National Road Safety Week, which takes place every November. Brake encourages communities, schools and companies to get involved in the Week by running local initiatives using advice and free resources provided by Brake.
As well as educational and care work, Brake campaigns, though media work and liaising with policy makers, for improvements to road safety by the Government, such as better road engineering measures to protect children walking and cycling, and increased numbers of traffic police.
Brake is a registered charity, funded by donations from individuals and companies and Government grants for specific projects. Without the support of partners such as Green Flag Motoring Assistance, we would not be able to continue our life-saving work.
